Surfing Lesson at Cape Foulwind

for Peter Rangi

Let the ocean carry you
as the toitoi stalk its plume
or the sand dune its memory
of stone:

high and alone.

When the waves curl their fingers
round your body,
toss your mind to the sky.

And when the beach rushes up
to question you,
remember not to lie.
